Mice harboring this mNF-H-cre transgene have nuclear localized-Cre recombinase expression directed primarily to cortex and hippocampus neurons coinciding the late stages of brain development by the mouse neurofilament-H gene promoter. These mice may be useful in generating conditional knockouts for neurobiological, neurodevelopmental, neuromuscular, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), or aging studies involving the neurons of the brain and spinal cord.

Molecular Note
An 8.5 kb promoter fragment of mouse Nefh, containing the 5' UTR and 40 bp of non-coding sequence of exon 1 ending before the start codon, was adjoined to sequence encoding Cre recombinase with an SV40 nuclear localization signal. An SV40 polyadenylation signal was also included in the construct. Expression of Cre recombinase is driven in neurons of the brain and spinal cord during late development (around E18.5). Line is best described and is representative of the other lines.

Breeding Considerations
When maintaining a live colony, hemizygous mice may be bred together, to non-carrier (wildtype) siblings, or to FVB/NJ inbred mice. The donating investigator reports that homozygous mice develop a neurological phenotype with seizures and become infertile and moribund.
